Here are some examples of thinking strategically with grants:

Strategy Tip:
In the case of the R&D Tax Credit you need to either be an Incorporated Tax Paying entity or have set up your

business such that the expenditure is able to be claimed under an eligible entity. Not knowing this before you begin your development project can mean missing out on large rebates at the time when you need it most, pre -revenue.

Strategy tip:
Project starting dates are important when applying for grants. Most grants are project based and any expenses paid for prior to approval will not be able to be claimed. Planning your projects well in advance and knowing the dates when grants are open will mean that you can maximise you grants and stretch budgets.

Strategy tip:
For export grants consider saving your grants in the lean years when your expenditure is small. The EMDG (Export Market Development Grant) is only valid for 7 applications per company and has a rebate that is calculated as 50% of costs over the first $10,000 (but also has a minimum threshold of $20,000). If you are not going to spend the minimum amount then you might be better off applying for state export grants that are usually under $20,000.
