Tips on Government Grant Applications

1. What Government Grants are out there?

Every year the Australian federal and State Governments gives out billions of dollars to support small businesses. Government Grants generally support key policy areas of skills and job creation, productivity, sustainability, export, health and innovation. Grant Programs come and go. Some like the R&D Tax scheme have been around for over 25 years. Others are offered once only.

2. Are there any grants for Start up companies?

Yes there are but don't expect too much. A few good ones are Perth and Melbourne city council, NT Research and Innovation and the Federal NEIS program. Bigger amounts are offered to innovative projects through the Commercialisation Australia program.

3. What are the most common mistakes that applicants make?

The following are common mistakes made by applicants :

Not answering the questions- address the specific question only
Not checking the eligibility criteria before beginning the application
Not understanding that matching funding requirements
Missing the deadlines

Bad fit with grant objectives
Insubstantial evidence of claimed expenses
Failing to demonstrate credibility

4. What other options are there to match grant funding requirements?

Consider the following options to find you matching funding:

Bank finance
Projected revenues based on previous financial years
Credit from suppliers
Get payment from customers by pre-orders
Raise money with FFF (Friends Family and Fools)
Investors - Angel Investors or Venture Capital

5. Can I apply for more than one grant?

Yes, but read the fine print. Some grants are sequential, meaning that you can get the funding for Commercialisation Australia and still be eligible for EMDG and R&D Tax rebates. Some are mutually exclusive. The general rule is no double dipping.
